Transform Fresno Project #: CEPTitle: Youth Leadership DevelopmentCategory: Community Engagement PlanPartners/Organizations: Youth Leadership Institute and Fresno EOC Street SaintsStatus: In progress

Project Summary: The Transform Youth Leadership Development Program is a year-long program which seeks to develop young people living in the Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) project area both professionally and personally to grow their leadership skills and to serve as ambassadors for Transform Fresno. Transform Fresno Youth Leaders will be trained in the areas of environmental justice, financial literacy, public speaking, and more. These skills will equip Transform Fresno Youth Leaders to support and uplift local TCC projects and Transform Fresno community meetings. Future program meetings will be held in southwest Fresno, while training and curriculum development will start virtually in Summer 2020.

Project Details: The Community Engagement Plan will solicit local partners to host and participate in outreach activities in the project area. Several engagement strategies will be deployed for a greater amount of community involvement and knowledge for the community of the Transform Fresno projects. The Transform Fresno Youth Leadership Development Program will cultivate 12 new youth leaders per year to support the community engagement efforts. This group of young people, ages 14-24, will receive both education and training on community organizing, facilitation, public speaking, and local government procedures, such as the budget process and types of investment programs. Participants will engage in “high-touch” direct project information and engagement at the community level through attendance at local events, door-to-door outreach, and assistance in the Story Corps program. They may develop and implement proposals for community engagement strategies and events, to be decided upon by their cohort, through a model of participatory budgeting like that which was used to develop the Transform Fresno slate of projects.
